On August 16, 2025, the China Enterprises Chamber of Commerce in Malaysia (CECCM) organized the “Together for Malayan Tapir” CSR event at the Sungai Dusun Wildlife Reserve in Selangor. The event was hosted by China Unicom (Malaysia) Operations Sdn Bhd, with strong participation from 20 member companies, and was supported by the Department of Wildlife and National Parks Peninsular Malaysia (PERHILITAN).

Over 70 member representatives gathered to plant 100 saplings for the Tapir Food Bank Program, taking concrete action to support habitat restoration for the Malayan Tapir and demonstrating the social responsibility of Chinese enterprises in Malaysia. During the tree planting session, Mr. Raffi from the Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) gave an insightful explanation on biodiversity indices, helping participants better understand the scientific significance of ecological restoration in practice.

CECCM President, Mr. Ni Qingjiu, highlighted that Chinese enterprises in Malaysia are not only active in infrastructure development such as ports, highways, and energy projects, but also play a role in environmental and community initiatives. “Building bridges and roads connects cities, but protecting nature and wildlife connects the future. While driving economic growth, we must also shoulder the responsibility of preserving the environment, so that development and nature coexist in harmony.”

Ms. Zhao Manli, Deputy General Manager of China Unicom (Malaysia), noted that the Malayan tapir is known as the “natural gardener” of tropical rainforests. “This tree planting initiative not only replenishes the tapir’s food sources but also contributes to forest restoration and ecological connectivity. While China Unicom focuses on connecting people through technology, we also hope to extend that ‘connection’ to nature — advancing sustainable development through both innovation and green responsibility.”

Dr. David Magintan, Chief Assistant Director of PERHILITAN’s Ex-Situ Conservation Division, emphasized that the saplings will become a vital food source and play a key role in restoring the tapir’s habitat. He urged greater public attention to the plight of this critically endangered species, threatened by habitat loss, road accidents, and illegal hunting.

The day’s program included tree planting, a plaque unveiling ceremony, a guided tour of the Sungai Dusun Wildlife Reserve, and an interactive tapir experience. Participants observed the tapirs’ feeding habits up close and learned more about conservation efforts through a briefing by the center’s director, Mr. Adli — gaining a deeper appreciation of the urgency and importance of conservation work.

To conclude the event, CECCM President Mr. Ni exchanged commemorative gifts with Dr. David Magintan, symbolizing their shared commitment to tapir conservation. He also presented certificates of appreciation to all participating companies in recognition of their generous support and tree adoptions.

This CSR initiative represents CECCM’s ongoing efforts to encourage corporate responsibility among Chinese enterprises in Malaysia. It also aims to inspire broader engagement from businesses and society in protecting endangered species and safeguarding biodiversity.
